About

This site, brought to you by the Independent Petroleum Association of America, is part of a broader education and outreach campaign called Energy Tax Facts. Despite the common misuse of terms like “tax-breaks” and “giveaways,” America’s oil and natural gas producers do not receive a single dollar in government subsidies. In fact, deductions provided to America’s independent oil and natural gas producers are no different than those provided to technology companies for research and development, farmers for fertilizer, or manufacturers for steel and pipe. This website is here to set the record straight, and provide resources on these historic and vital provisions, which help ensure robust U.S. energy production.

IPAA has represented independent oil and natural gas producers and service companies across the United States for more than 95 years. America’s independent producers develop 91 percent of the nation’s oil and natural gas wells. These companies account for 83 percent of America’s oil production, 90 percent of its natural gas and natural gas liquids (NGL) production Historic tax provisions – like those provided to almost every American manufacturer – are crucial to the continued operation of America’s independent producers, businesses with an average of just twelve employees each.
